Ritareista muodostetut joukkueet hevosineen hyökkäävät toistensa kimppuun puisilla, pesäpallomailoja muistuttavilla lyömäaseilla.
Tarkoituksena lyödä vastustaja hevosen selästä tai rikkoa kypärässä vastustajalla oleva koriste.
Joukkuetaistelu ratsain entisaikojen esikuvan mukaisesti josta taatusti ei vauhtia puutu.

Mélee on turnajaisten ensimmäinen muoto. Ritarit ja joukkueet harjoittivat sotataitojaan laajoilla peltoalueilla euroopassa. He taistelivat toisiaan vastaan jättäen kuolettavan lyönnin lyömättä. Tästä mélee jalostui ja siirtyi pikkuhiljaa kaupunkien keskustoihin aidatuille alueille. Näin yksi kaikkien aikojen suosituimmista turnajaislajeista oli syntynyt.
